In 1947, Saudi Arabia lacked an anthem, so, when King Abdulaziz visited Egypt that year, he asked Egyptian composer Abdul Rahman Al-Khateeb to create an anthem and “Aash Al Maleek” was created. The melody, an Arab fanfare style, is similar to those of other Arab states in the area at the time. In 1958, the first set of lyrics were written for the anthem by Mohammed Talat, but weren’t often heard. In 1984 King Fahd ask poet Ibrahim Al Khafaji to write new lyrics, which are the official lyrics today.

Nestled amidst stunning mountainous landscapes, Abha offers a unique blend of culture, history, and natural beauty. One of the standout locations of Abha is its alpine-inspired "High City", located at an altitude of over 2,200 meters above sea level. Here, we were treated to panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, lush greenery, and vibrant valleys. Many of the restaurants and cafes also have views of Abha city. In true Living the Jo Life style, we explored the vibrant Tuesday market in Abha and the gold market in neighboring Khamis Mushait. We met so many lovely and hospitable Saudi people while shopping at the market. Some even took us shopping. Abha is known for its breathtaking natural scenery, with terraced landscapes and tall mountains, where you can encounter wild baboons along the side of the road. A short drive from Abha will take you to the historic Rijal Alma village, a tentative UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, we explored traditional architecture and experienced the timeless charm of Saudi Arabian culture. Not far from the historic village, we visited a lovely local honey farm, where we enjoyed some of the best honey we've ever tasted. We finished the day exploring the local flavors of Saudi Arabian cuisine at a multi-storey restaurant that was beautifully decorated in traditional Saudi Arabian style. In today's episode, we take you along on one of our craziest trips so far. Never in a million years did we think we'd go to Saudi Arabia this soon. Then, all of a sudden, we decided to just do it. We were hesitant to go given all we’ve read about the country. During our journey to 100 countries and beyond, we will undoubtedly visit countries where we don’t agree with certain laws or practices, and personally, we don’t want this to stop us from going. After all, how can we build understanding if we refuse to meet people, or are not open-minded enough to talk to someone who might disagree with us? We need more understanding, respect, and international cooperation, not greater divides. Our intention has always been to use our platform as a personal diary to look back on, and we want to take every opportunity we can to grow and learn more about the world. Let's take a look inside the life of Saudi Arabia's Richest Family.
Saudi Arabia has long been off limits to foreign tourists and travelers. Since a few months, however, it’s possible to visit the country on a tourist visa. I made use of this opportunity and traveled to Saudi Arabia for 2 weeks, including Riyadh, the Edge of the World, Jeddah, Medina, Al Ula, Umluj, and the Red Sea coast. In this video I travel to Riyadh, the capital city in the center of the country. After visiting a mosque for Friday prayer and eating lunch with the locals, I tour to modern shopping malls, museums, traditional bazaars, a construction site with migrant workers, the famous Sky Bridge Kingdom Tower, and finally the Riyadh Season Festival, designed to promote tourism and culture. While I spent almost 3 days in Riyadh, I comprised the video to make it into one single day. This is the first episode of a 6 part vlog style series about my journey through Saudi Arabia.
