From the Northern Okinawa forests of the Yanbaru I went in search of two of Japan's rarest of Bird species, the Pryers Woodpecker and the Okinawa Rail. This is the adventure and the surprising solution to the greatest challenge to film the emblem of the region, a species that has also been appointed as a Natural Living Monument by the Wildlife Department of Japan. Filmed with an iPhone6S Plus my main goal is to show people that wildlife filming is also an option for smart devices. Beyond the selfie these cameras are becoming increasingly attractive for filmmakers and documentary groups.

An hour drive from Naha Airport, Yanbaru in the northern part of Okinawa Island includes the fishing port town of Motobu, the farming village of Nakijin, western Nago City and neighboring Iejima Island. The land is generally flat, making for a leisurely bike ride past hibiscus bushes along the coast, narrow streets through traditional neighborhoods, such as Imadomari, and stretches of farmland with the occasional resident water buffalo. This is the teaser, trailer for the soon to be completed series of short wildlife films that I recently filmed in the dense jungles of Northern Okinawa in Japan, a region known as the 'Yanbaru'. What sets this apart is that I filmed everything in this, apart from the underwater and obviously risky elements such as snake strikes, with an iPhone6S+. For those risk elements, be they wildlife or environmental related I used a GoProHero4 Black Edition. All timelapses, shot with the iPhone and edited with LRTimelapse and Adobe Lightroom. I'm hoping to show folks that it doesn't need a massive budget or super expensive filming gear to get out, find record and share your wildlife experiences. Full credits to be written up with the first Episode.

going to yanbaru national park is a long drive so in order to get there early i have to leave house at 3:am, even you leave early you dont know if you can find wildlife but honestly its not just about what you can get its about being in the wild, thank you for watching guys and i hope to see you in my next adventure.....

The forested Northern Region of Okinawa, known as the Yanbaru, is home to a myriad of incredible and sometimes dangerous wildlife. I recently traveled to the region with the goal of filming with an iPhone 6S Plus to show folks that smart device imaging is indeed a viable option in the realm of wildlife films. The main thing is to have a desire to share what nature gives you. Smart devices, and indeed the cameras they house are becoming stronger and stronger, delivering up to 4K video resolution. Granted they are very small sensors so they undergo a lot of compression in comparison to cinematic 4k cameras but even so, they give you an option to get out there and film. The only sequences here where I used a Go pro were the underwater segments and the sequence for the snake strike. Beyond that I was using an iPhone6S Plus fitted into an iOgrapher casing. For wider shots I was using the Moondog Labs 1.33x Anamorphic Adapter. For the time-lapse segments I used Lapse It iOS App and edited that using Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom and LRTimelapse Pro.
