#mario #fantasticbeasts #starwars This is NOT a review of the Mario movie. This is a video about why people started enjoying bad movies. Feel free to watch Dunkey’s video for a pretty close estimation to why I think it’s bad: Mario Dunkview - 🤍 There are people who ENJOYED the Emoji Movie. There are people who enjoyed Pixels, the Fantastic Beasts movies, the Matrix sequels, the Ghostbusters female remake, the Suicide Squad movies, all the bad Star Wars movies and sequels… the list goes on and on. This is not just the result of Disney and Nintendo making cash grabs at the box office people actually LIKE the experience these films offer. What is that enjoyment? Here are my six theories. #Netflix #LeagueOfLegends #Jayce An overall theme subtly shaped the writing of Jayce, Viktor, Ekko, Silco, Heimerdinger, and others. Arcane took a different approach with its men from how it wrote women. Problematic tropes and sexist stigmas weren’t as much of an issue here. Instead, every male character in Arcane approached their arcs with flaws that ARE stereotypically male. They all experienced a similar set of gender-related trials and challenges. And they all emerged from those challenges conveying a subtle message to the audience about masculinity. The themes and techniques here are much subtler than what we covered in the How Arcane Writes Women video, but they’re still just as powerful and just as groundbreaking. 0:00 - How Arcane Wrote Women vs Men 2:56 - What Arcane was Addressing 6:27 - “Write women as PEOPLE” 8:32 - Male Stereotypes 13:16 - Male Relationships 17:15 - Male Expression of Love 18:45 - Why Piltover/Zaun? #arcane #thelastofus #tlou Why do we like TRAGEDY if it makes us sad? The Last of Us and Arcane are two great examples of stories that end with a perfect implosion of every arc, and we love it, we enjoy every second of it, we specifically call these stories “BEAUTIFUL”. There’s a specific shape to these stories: Joel’s journey with Ellie falls apart in this inevitable symmetrical way that mixes love and violence, Jinx’s relationship with Vi and Silco explodes in a fiery inferno of hatred, grief, and empowerment. What can we learn from scenes like Rue’s death in the Hunger Games? What can we learn from non-tragic beautiful scenes like when the Jurassic Park characters first see dinosaurs? What about the train scene in Spirited Away? The ceasefire in Children of Men? The bombing sequence in Empire of the Sun? Can we unify the type of beautiful experience we feel in all these stories? #Arcane #LeagueOfLegends #Silco #Jinx Jinx is a paradox. Arcane gave her both a hero's arc AND a villain's arc, but you need to do a little digging to uncover just how heroic she is. Considering Piltover's oppression of Zaun, the council's rampant corruption, and the University's wayward technology, characters like Jayce, Viktor, and Mel may not be as good as the show paints them to be. In that context, Jinx can be seen as an admirable hero who has to learn to embrace her broken identity to fight back against Piltover's tyrannical upper class for an independent Zaun. The fact that Arcane is able to tell both stories, one overtly and one more subtly, is absolute genius writing (as always). #LeagueOfLegends #Jinx #Vi Grey characters are what make Arcane SHINE. Jinx’s final act in episode 9 forces upon the audience an unbelievably complex mixture of emotions about every character in the show. How does a story create this kind of complexity? Arcane’s grey heroes (Vi, Vander, Ekko, Caitlyn) and grey villains (Silco, Singed) and everyone in between (Jinx, Jayce, Viktor, Heimerdinger, Mel) are full of weaknesses, redeeming qualities, moral failures, and moral triumphs. They thrive in Runeterra’s nuanced world of two-faced facades and outright injustice. Piltover and Zaun, the sisters, hextech and shimmer all follow along their separate independent tracks until episode’s 9 implosion of hopelessness, catharsis, failure, triumph, all questions, no answers. #tlou #arcane #lgbt Men in fiction are changing. Bill from The Last of Us episode 3 is a prime example, but the male characters in Arcane, Stranger Things, Knives Out, the Mandalorian, Logan, and even real people whose stories have become popularized in movies like Richard Williams in King Richard, Desmond Doss in Hacksaw Ridge, and Elvis. But what's most interesting about this phenomenon is that the characters are still traditionally masculine overall, but through emphasis and de-emphasis and rearranging certain traits from our internal "lists" of what's masculine and what's not. The ways this is accomplished in both The Last of Us and Arcane are as precise as they are fascinating. "Who Killed the Vulnerable Action Hero?" #LeagueOfLegends #Jinx #Daenerys Arcane's and Game of Thrones' climaxes are nearly identical moments for Jinx and Daenerys respectively, but this pivotal scene of "The Bells" failed for Game of Thrones and "What Could Have Been"'s finale worked spectacularly. Why did Dany's madness arc fall short? What goes into a good "burn it all down" moment? Drawing on lessons from Arcane in addition to Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Midnight Express, and other great madness arcs, there are commonalities we see in how these extreme character moments are brought about. Game of Thrones had so many tools to draw on that it failed to properly utilize: the death of Rhaegal and Viserion, the crazed lore of Targaryen history, the mythology of Old Valyria, and obviously the shrinking but still impressive cast of characters surrounding Dany in her final episodes. Using Jinx's arc as a model, we can give the Mother of Dragons the great fiery end she deserves. #LeagueOfLegends #Netflix #Vi Does Sevika have an arc? What role does she play in Arcane’s plot? In its themes? This character stays in the background and singlehandedly props up not just the plot, but one of Arcane’s protagonists as well, as no other character could (or would willingly choose to) do. This is a character who embodies the inferiority we see in the Undercity in a radically different form than characters like Vi, Jinx, Silco, or Viktor. What she embraces about that inferiority no one else does, and it’s her source of strength and her animosity towards characters like Vi and Jinx. All of this comes to a head in the finale episode in her epic fight with Vi. 0:00 - BIG Question 1:28 - Framework #1 6:18 - Framework #2 9:02 - Framework #3 13:27 - BIG Answer 16:33 - Possible fix? 17:15 - Thx for 20k! #jacksparrow #pirates #johnnydepp “Guidelines”, “parley”, “poppet”, “acquiesce to your request”, “savvy”, “best/worst pirate”... it goes on and on with this movie. The dialogue is so memorable, but really so QUOTABLE. Most quotable dialogue (think “Luke I am your father”) comes from iconic scenes, but Pirates of the Caribbean uses a cheat code. Jack, Elizabeth, Will, even Gibbs and Norrington are constantly quoting each other, fostering a movie-specific social culture of quotability. This is fun and witty and silly and it makes the audience want to join in as well. #LeagueOfLegends #Netflix #Vi “I thought you could love me like you used to. But you changed you.” This pivotal line Jinx says in the final scene of the show is difficult to understand. It seems like Vi is perhaps the one character in the show who changed the least! She comes out of prison wanting nothing more than to find her sister and care for her. This line can’t refer to Vi going after Sevika and Silco, that’s not a change. It can’t refer to her refusing to kill Caitlyn, which she would never do. It can’t refer to her caring for people other than her sister because she always cared for and fought for the rest of her family: Vander, Mylo, Claggor, Ekko. So what does this mysterious line mean?
