PBFD stands for psittacine, which is another word for parrot, beak, and feather disease. It's a very, very serious condition that fortunately we don't see as often now as we used to years ago, but it is caused by a virus that is very contagious from bird to bird. It generally kills birds. It's an immunosuppressive. It suppresses the immune system virus that is spread from bird to bird via aerosols, also secretions in the air, feather dust, dried stool. It's very contagious and unfortunately, it's very difficult to get rid of. What are some of the signs it causes, Sarah? Sarah: Signs that it causes in birds that survive it as youngsters oftentimes, they'll have disheveled feathers. They'll be discolored. Their beak will be malformed, and oftentimes they'll be, I guess what people would call a poor doer. They won't be as bright and alert. They won't eat as well. They won't gain weight as well, and eventually a lot of them do, unfortunately wither away and die. Dr. Laurie: Yeah, and we see lots of feather picking birds who are sort of naked from the neck down. They have normal head feathers, but they're naked because they've pulled out all their feathers. Those are not to be confused with the beak and feather birds who often have no feathers on their head. They'll lose all their feathers. They'll just fall out. So if you see a bird who's really, truly naked, even on top of their head, you have to be a little suspicious. The good news is that there are reliable DNA tests for this disease and it's very serious. So if you have a beak and feather disease positive bird, you really do not want to bring other birds around it, and if you're ever going to bring in another bird to your home, you really need to get rid of anything that has been in contact with an infected bird, because it does persist in the environment and it is very contagious.

All you must know about Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease / PBFD / Extreme molting disease in birds This is the video of my Licky, the rescued Indian Ringneck who passed away recently. I don't want any bird to go through the life he had. 💔🥺 So sharing this video to spread information about the disease which affected him. 🤍 PBFD is a highly infectious and fatal viral disease in parrots. The disease can result in very high death rates in nestlings, both in captivity and the wild. It can cause long-term immunological suppression, and is characterized by feather dystrophy and loss, beak deformity and ultimately, death. It can be spread by food sharing through the bird's crop, fresh or dried excrement and feather and skin particles. The virus is extremely stable in the environment and can survive in nest hollows for years. There is no effective treatment for PBFD. It is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to remove the virus once it has been introduced into a captive or wild population. When you buy birds from pet shops, you perpetuate the cruelty of keeping birds in cages, and, because pet shops sell sick birds, you too become responsible for the spreading of diseases. This is yet another reason why the industry that breeds and provides birds for cages, is cruel and must be shut down. Never support pet shops that sell animals. Buy food and accessories for your animal companions from pet shops that are not part of the cruel trade in animals. Psittacine Beak And Feather Disease Psittacine beak and feather disease (PBFD) is a viral disease which affects not only parrots, but other birds too. It can be seen in cockatoos, African grey parrots, Eclectus parrots, lorikeets, lovebirds, and parrot species of Asian, Australian and African origin. Generally, PBFD affects young birds, seldom seen in birds older than three years of age. Symptom and Types PBFD can be easily recognized by its primary symptoms in the infected birds. There will be general feather loss, which cannot be attributed to bird’s self plucking; other symptoms include: Sharp feathers Clubbed feathers Abnormally short feathers (pin feathers) Loss of pigment in colored feathers Loss of powder down Bloody shafts in the feathers As the infection progresses, the bird will become depressed for days, and will then die suddenly. Causes Psittacine beak and feather disease is caused by the Circovirus. It is spread from infected birds to healthy birds by direct contact, usually from the dust of feathers, dander or feces; the disease is sometimes transmitted from contact with an infected nest box. Infected birds can also pass on the virus to their young. Since the virus can survive outside the bird’s body for years and cannot be killed by disinfectants, it can be spread easily and is difficult to control. Treatment Any bird infected with PBFD should be immediately quarantined. Euthanasia is recommended to prevent the spread and stop the bird’s suffering, as there is no effective treatment for this viral infection. Prevention To prevent PBFD, strict hygiene should be followed in bird colonies, especially controlling the dust. Also, regularly screen for PBFD. Consequently, if any bird is found infected, quarantine the bird and burn its nest box to prevent the disease from spreading. This video shows photos and videos of a few number of parrots recovered from PBFD infection by my novel method. This pbfd cure is a novel recovery method for pbfd parrots that has tested on more than 500 infected parrots, and works very good. PBFD in parrots treatment I found a treatment for pbfd infection in parrots. I am sharing this information for free before I publish my research because I want to help more pbfd birds sooner. It's a novel idea and research, if anyone makes money or paper using this idea or research I'll sue against him or her. We have tried Hemp seeds on many birds infected by pbfd virus with symptoms at different levels of illness. About 50% of daily food for pbfd birds should be hemp seeds. If the bird doesn't eat hemp seeds you can use hemp hearts or hemp seeds powder to make a soft food or solve it in drinking water. To remove shells from powder you can use sieve. The results are amazing, in first month the symptoms of illness started to disappear from beak an feathers, after months all of them returned to normal healthy condition. Hemp seeds is one of very common bird foods and it's completely safe for them. Most of fats in hemp seeds are unsaturated fats and don't store in liver.
