A performance of beiguan (Hokkien: pak-koán; 北管), also called Quanzhou beiguan (Hokkien: Choân-chiu pak-koán, 泉州北管), a traditional musical genre from Quangang District (泉港区), Quanzhou (泉州市), southern Fujian province (福建省), southeast China, performed by a 9-member ensemble from the Quangang Beiguan Heritage Protection Center (Chinese: Quangang Beiguan Chuancheng Baohu Zhongxin, 泉港北管传承保护中心). The repertoire of Quanzhou beiguan is said to have been introduced to southern Fujian by merchants and refugees from the Jianghuai region (江淮地区) of China (the alluvial plain lying between the Yangtze and Huai Rivers, encompassing Jiangsu, central and southern Anhui, and southern Henan) during the Qing Dynasty, most notably in the early years of the reign of the Guangxu Emperor (i.e., the early 1880s). In Chinese, beiguan (北管) literally means "northern pipe(s)," in reference to this tradition's origin approximately 1,000 km to the north of Quanzhou. The piece performed here is entitled "Mei Hua San Nong"《梅花三弄》(Three Repetitions of "Plum Blossoms"). Probably filmed in a concert hall in Quangang District (泉港区), Quanzhou (泉州市), southern Fujian province (福建省), southeast China, perhaps c. 2015. This video is probably part of a DVD that was released in China, perhaps c. 2015. In approximately 2005 the tradition of Quanzhou beiguan was included in the First Batch of the Fujian Province Province-Level List of Intangible Cultural Heritage Masterpieces (福建省第一批省级非物质文化遗产代表作名录). Additionally, in 2006 the tradition of Quanzhou beiguan, centering on Quanzhou (泉州市), southern Fujian province (福建省), southeast China, was included in the First Batch of 518 traditions inscribed in the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of China (第一批国家级非物质文化遗产名录) by China's Ministry of Culture (中华人民共和国文化部, known since March 2018 as the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, 中华人民共和国文化和旅游部). 北管,為17世紀~20世紀中葉台灣與閩南兩地區流傳廣遠的傳統音樂及戲曲,在傳統的農業社會中,深受歡迎,可以說是台灣早期的『流行音樂』。 北管所涵蓋的範圍非常地廣,目前一般較被接受的說法是,早期從福建及廣東等地傳入台灣的非閩客系統音樂聲腔及戲曲,都被歸入北管的範圍,有別於『閩南土腔』的南管和客家戲曲。 多用於迎春、迎神、廟會、新居落成、婚禮、壽慶等,非常熱鬧,因為主要的樂器有嗩吶、椰胡、鑼、鼓等,有時在路上亦常可聽到與看到。像過新年時演奏的「天官賜福」、「新年吹春」、娶新娘時吹的「八音」、「醉扶登樓」;新居落成時的「祝喜」、「鬧廳」;祝壽時的「福祿壽全」、「百家春」;廟會時的「醉八仙」、「遊將令等」,真是曲牌眾多,不勝枚舉。 北管包含了音樂以及戲曲兩種類型,台灣的北管戲,根據一些研究者的說法可以分為『四平』和『亂談』兩個劇種,但是因為四平戲很早以前就已經失傳了,所以現在提到北管戲,通常指的是『亂彈戲』。 『亂彈戲』又有兩大系統:『福路』與『西路』。『福路』屬於老梆子腔系統的聲腔,因為比較早傳入台灣,所以又稱『舊路』,信奉的戲神多為西秦王爺;西路屬於皮黃腔、吹撥腔的系統,又叫做『新路』信奉的戲神則為田都元帥。這兩個系統的最大差別,在於唱腔不同。 福路的領奏樂器是椰子殼作成的『殼仔弦』(又叫做椰胡、提弦),常用的唱腔有平板、二凡、緊中慢、慢中緊等,旋律聽起來比較激昂;而西路的領奏樂器則是以桂竹筒製成的『吊規仔』(也就是京胡)常用的唱腔有西皮、二黃、緊跺子、慢跺子等,旋律較福路平緩些,但是因為用吊規仔伴奏,唱腔又和京劇有些接近,許多對北管較陌生的人第一次聽到都會以為是在演唱京劇。 * 「轎前鼓」又有人稱為「弄破鼎」,通常在台灣南部較為常見,尤其是在曾文溪流域一帶,以麻豆最為盛行,最早可能起源於傳統宋江陣的鑼鼓。 由於宋江陣屬於武陣,其鑼鼓節奏較快,敲打起來有如千軍萬馬奔馳在前,尤其當「轎前鼓」配合著武轎神輿出巡繞境的時候,在節奏的搭配之下,乘坐在神轎上的武將各個虎虎生風、威風凜凜,好不神氣。 Beiguan is a type of traditional music, melody and theatrical performance between the 17th and mid-20th centuries. It was widespread in Zhangzhou (the southern part of China's Fujian province) and Taiwan. By the early 21st century its popularity had declined precipitously. Beiguan usually uses the following instruments: two suona (oboes), bangzi (woodblock), daluo (large bossed gong), xiaoluo (small gong), bangu (high-pitched drum), tonggu (small drum), xiaobo (small cymbals), and dabo (large cymbals). The name of the lead singer and the name of the ensemble are, unfortunately, unknown. 《北管印象》 作曲|王乙聿 指揮|劉江濱 場次|2014竹塹國樂節-樂動新竹 日期|2014.07.05 地點|新竹市文化局演藝廳 本曲為2014年由新竹青年國樂團「竹塹國樂節開幕音樂會」委託創作。 作曲者採集臺灣家鄉每逄過年過節、神明聖誕遶境時,穿梭在巷弄間的北管音樂作為創作素材。回想兒時爺爺(王屘老先生)曾是三峽的民間北管藝人,縈繞在腦海裡的熱鬧遶境場景,感受鄉民互換香火的熱情與虔誠。那迴盪在人群間的澎湃樂音,是記憶裡爺爺的聲音;與三五好友一同在家切磋北管音樂,無師自通的製作樂器,讓疼愛的小孫子在身旁邊看、邊學、邊玩耍,是記憶裡爺爺的身影。爺爺曾說,在他離開人世前會製作一把他最滿意的琴送給作者當作傳家寶,無奈離別總是在不該來的時候發生,這份承諾只好永速封存於記憶中。每逢年節神明遶境換香的習俗對作曲音來說,象徵新的開始,鄉民傳承的香火與神明慈悲的祝福,為家鄉帶來整年的豐收、平安與快樂。作者謹以此曲獻給爺爺(王屘老先生),以及每一位誠心祈求幸福的人們。 “Memories of Beiguan Music” Composer|Wang Yi-Yu Conductor|Liu Chiang-Pin Concert|2014 Hsinchu Chinese Music Festival – Musicking 🤍Hsinchu Date|2014.07.05 Venue|Hsinchu Performing Arts Center, Taiwan This composition was commissioned by the Hsinchu Youth Chinese Orchestra for the Opening Concert for the 2014 Hsinchu Chinese Music Festival. The composer collected the music materials that Beiguan musicians from his hometown played while they traveled through streets and alleys with religious processions during the festive seasons as his inspiration. The music represents his nostalgic childhood memories of his grandfather Wang Man, a local Beiguan musician in Sanxia. For the composer, the religious processions during the Spring Festival symbolize a new beginning, the passing down of cultural heritage, and the mercy and blessings from above. The composition is dedicated to his grandfather Wang Man and whoever prays sincerely for happiness. A performance of "Liu Chuan"《六串》, a piece from the repertoire of beiguan (Hokkien: pak-koán; 北管), also called Quanzhou beiguan (Hokkien: Choân-chiu pak-koán, 泉州北管), a traditional musical genre from Quangang District (泉港区), Quanzhou (泉州市), southern Fujian province (福建省), southeast China. The senior beiguan master, who plays guban (鼓板, drum and clapper) and sings the gongche notation (Chinese: gongche pu, 工尺谱) syllables in this video, is Mr. Lian Yubi (连瑜碧, b. 1932), who holds the status of Municipal-Level Representative Transmitter of the Municipal-Level Intangible Cultural Heritage item of Quanzhou beiguan (市级非物质文化遗产项目泉州北管代表性传承人). The names of the other musicians are, unfortunately, unknown. Probably filmed in Quangang District (泉港区), Quanzhou (泉州市), southern Fujian province (福建省), southeast China, c. March 15, 2015. The exact location of filming is unknown. The repertoire of Quanzhou beiguan is said to have been introduced to southern Fujian by merchants and refugees from the Jianghuai region (江淮地区) of China (the alluvial plain lying between the Yangtze and Huai Rivers, encompassing Jiangsu, central and southern Anhui, and southern Henan) during the Qing Dynasty, most notably in the early years of the reign of the Guangxu Emperor (i.e., the early 1880s). In Chinese, beiguan (北管) literally means "northern pipe(s)," in reference to this tradition's origin approximately 1,000 km to the north of Quanzhou. In approximately 2005 the tradition of Quanzhou beiguan was included in the First Batch of the Fujian Province Province-Level List of Intangible Cultural Heritage Masterpieces (福建省第一批省级非物质文化遗产代表作名录). La première rencontre avec le beiguan se fait souvent aux abord des temples où l'on voit et surtout entend toute une procession composée de petites camionnettes bleues où on pris place des musiciens frappant à toute force sur des gong et des joueurs de suona qui s'époumonent à tirer de leur instrument des sons stridents relayés par des baffles grésillantes... Ce genre de musique est bien de la musique beiguan mais en fait il ne s'agit que d'une petite partie de l'opéra beiguan. S'il arrive fréquemment de voir de l'opéra taïwanais, cela devient extrêmement rare de voir de l'opéra beiguan à Taïwan. Pour tout vous dire depuis 15 ans que je fréquente Taïwan, j'ai dû en voir une seule fois et encore par hasard et peut-être ne savais-je pas que s'en était. Il est temps pour nous de tout savoir sur la musique et le théâtre chanté beiguan.

A performance of beiguan (Hokkien: pak-koán; 北管), also called Quanzhou beiguan (Hokkien: Choân-chiu pak-koán, 泉州北管), a traditional musical genre from Quangang District (泉港区), Quanzhou (泉州市), southern Fujian province (福建省), southeast China, performed by a 9-member ensemble from the Quangang Beiguan Heritage Protection Center (Chinese: Quangang Beiguan Chuancheng Baohu Zhongxin, 泉港北管传承保护中心). The repertoire of Quanzhou beiguan is said to have been introduced to southern Fujian by merchants and refugees from the Jianghuai region (江淮地区) of China (the alluvial plain lying between the Yangtze and Huai Rivers, encompassing Jiangsu, central and southern Anhui, and southern Henan) during the Qing Dynasty, most notably in the early years of the reign of the Guangxu Emperor (i.e., the early 1880s). An informal rendition of "Si Da Jing"《四大景》, a song in the repertoire of beiguan (Hokkien: pak-koán; 北管), also called Quanzhou beiguan (Hokkien: Choân-chiu pak-koán, 泉州北管), a traditional musical genre from Quangang District (泉港区), Quanzhou (泉州市), southern Fujian province (福建省), southeast China, using gongche notation (Chinese: gongche pu, 工尺谱) syllables in place of lyrics. The senior beiguan master (on the left) is Mr. Zhuang Huayu (庄华玉, born c. 1927). The name of the younger performer on the right is, unfortunately, unknown.
